Taxation generally is set to shift from income to consumption related, with environmentally adverse products in particular being earmarked for increased taxation. The levying of air transport tax forms part of this shift.
The Netherlands intends to start charging charge air transport tax in 2021. Its preferred option would be the introduction of an unambiguous set of air transport regulations at EU level; if this turns out to be overly ambitious, taxation per aircraft and/or passenger will be introduced instead, a survey having borne out that a moderate air transport tax charge of € 3.80 per passenger for European flights and € 22.00 for intercontinental flights would be beneficial in terms of prosperity, GDP and climate.
