The application deadline for childcare allowances has since January 2013 been shortened with a retroactive application period of one month. In practice it appears that many parents were not aware of this change. As such many applications were submitted too late, causing many parents to miss out on the allowance. Minister Asscher (Minister of Social Affairs and Employment) has announced that the shortened application period for 2012 and 2013 will be removed. Parents who did not make their applications for the allowance in time for these years will receive another opportunity to request the allowance. The tax authorities will inform parents who have applied for the childcare allowance retroactively within two months of the deadline. Other parents can also still submit an application.

As of 1 January 2014 the new ruling will be in a modified form for benefit year 2014. For parents wishing to apply for a childcare allowance a retroactive applications period of three months applies.
